Seen: First City Festival

by Dylan Odbert |

Our trip to the First City Music Festival in Monterey last weekend was a success. We headed out Friday evening and took a pit stop in our home town of Arroyo Grande to wet our whistles at the local watering hole, Bills Place, before crashing out for the night. After getting our ears lowered by our favorite barber Josh Ralph on Saturday morning, we hit the dusty trail for Laguna Seca Raceway Campgrounds: our home for the next few nights. We got into the Festival around 5pm, and happened to be just in time to sneak back stage for Delta Spirit. If you havent seen Delta Spirit live before, we highly recommend it. Their energy and talent make for an incredibly fun and inspiring show. Most of the day was spent running back and forth from stage to stage, catching some of our favorite bands for a great time and trying to beat the crowds. We really enjoyed the massive Fair Turkey legs and Bacon Wrapped everything, but at about 11pm it was a race for the Cabs. It seemed like everyone in town was looking for Cab. Thank god we are fast runners and loud whistlers, we got a Cab in no time. We spent the rest of the night around the campfire roasting sausages and drinking coldies. The next day was just as exciting. We managed to get back stage for Electric Guest, Deer Hunter and Lucero, and it was awesome not having to be elbowed in the face while seeing your favorite bands or have exceptionally bad dancers use you as a wall . Modest Mouse was another story. We were in the thick of it! Dustin might as well have been a stripper pole the way this psychedelic festival goer was dancing into him. But we really can't complain, Modest Mouse put on an amazing show as always, and it may have been worth being used as a stripper pole just to witness such greatness. For the being the first year of the First City Festival, we think they nailed it: the crowd was great, the bands were perfect, the food was greasy, and the weather and location couldn't be any better. Clear your schedule for next year, this is an event you don't want to miss.
